Solving Equations – With Variables On Both Sides

In this tutorial, you will learn how to solve equations with variables on both sides of the equal sign by using several examples. We will try to solve several equations step by step.

When solving equations with variables on both sides. The first step is to gather all the variables on one side of the equation. It does not matter which side of the equation, but we need to get them all together on one side.

Let’s take a look at one example.

Example 1: Solve for variable x.

7 + 3x = 4x

Step 1: Gather all variables on one side. In this case, you want to gather all x’s on the right side. To do this, subtract 3x on left side and right side.

7 + 3x – 3x = 4x – 3x

Step 2: Solve. Subtracting 3x from 3x will give us 0 and subtracting 3x from 4x will give us x. This should lead to equation below.

7 = x or x = 7

Option Step 3: Verify. We now found that x = 7. To verify if this is true, we will substitute in 7 in all the x’s we see in the original equation.

7 + 3(7) = 4(7)

7 + 21 = 28

28 = 28

That’s it. The solution x = 7 checks.
